Swazi

Cape Town, February 2008: ‘Swazi’ gives a glimpse at the somewhat quirky life story of Mark Elderkin. Born and raised in the Majestic Kingdom of Swaziland, he leaves for the South African boarding school ‘system’ to become a choir boy, and returns to his homeland eight years later. Something has changed but he can’t figure out exactly
 what!

Always in the headlines for the wrong reasons, such as King Mswati, his fifteen wives and their BMWs, this is a look at the hilarious side of Swaziland that most people never get to see. There are many experiences and events in Mark’s life that local audiences will be able to identify with, making ‘Swazi’ a play with multi-national appeal.

Mark Elderkin comes to The Intimate Theatre after over ten local theatre productions including a number of Maynardville Theatre productions and film and television work including, ‘Goodbye Bafana’ a heart-rending story of the life of Nelson Mandela. He won the Fleur du Cap Award for Most Promising Student in 2002 and the FNB Vita Award for Best New Actor also in 2002.

‘Swazi’ is an original work written and performed by Mark and directed by well-known actor/director Rob Van Vuuren. It is suitable for all ages and is bound to have you laughing hysterically all the way home.

“A wonderful play that resonates on many different levels” (Die Burger)

“The joy of an inspired performer” (Andrew Buckland)

Mrs. Popczieski is fishing for a blue whale. In no more than her tin tub of a bath and just with a piece of string, old Mrs. Popczieski is fishing for a blue whale. Now, nobody in her village, the village of Kurtankall, can quite understand why this old lady would do such a thing? The only possible answer to this mystery is to indulge in the adventures, or rather mis-adventures of Ivan, a lost dancer, and Manuel a slightly deranged Spanish guitarist raised by three bandits. Their journey will surely uncover the truth as to why this old woman fishes for a blue whale, yet we cannot be sure as she still fishes today, she fishes and fishes….and we have not even begun to mention the Indian salesman who talks to his feet.

Scott Sparrow is a Rhodes University drama graduate. Scott has since worked and directed for major theatre companies, notably Janet Buckland’s Eastern Cape Company Ubom, and Nicholas Ellenbogan’s Theatre for Africa. Other credits include Paris in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at Maynardville, Cape Town, and more recently Geoffry Highland’s Production of Barker’s “Women Beware Women”.

Mouche

Performed by Tim Redpath
Written and Directed by Laine Cole
Based on Paul Gallico’s ‘Love of Seven Dolls’

Mouche is based on Paul Gallico’s Love of Seven Dolls and has been adapted by Laine Cole. Redpath is joined on stage by a series of puppets as he nimbly tells the story of love found in a ‘50s travelling circus in Paris between a sad and lonely puppeteer and a girl who isn’t there.

“Redpath is once again able to capture an entire story on his own with careful dialogue and deft physicality. Mouche is both sad and optimistic and laced with magic that will captivate you the whole way through.”

Emma Nicholson – The Argus Tonight

“Tim Redpath, whose The Prodigal proved the find of last year’s festival, was magnificent, morphing between male and female, child and adult, and skipping through a range of situations and emotions with an assortment of accents. Penned and directed by Laine Cole, Mouche makes for perfect escapist theatre.”

Prodigal Comes to Cape Town

artslink_prodigal_2.jpg

Prodigal
Starring Tim Redpath
Directed by Dani Marais
Written by Lorraine Knox

Cape Town April 2008: After playing to packed houses and standing ovations at the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown in both 2006 and 2007, and following a Midlands/Gauteng schools tour multi-talented Tim Redpath finally brings his one-man masterpiece Prodigal to Cape Town. The show will run for three weeks from April 1st to April 19th, Tuesdays to Saturdays at the cozy Intimate Theatre, in Gardens and will then be showing on Sundays and Mondays at the Kalk Bay Theatre from May 11th to May 25th.

A neatly plotted and superbly written classic for the modern age, Prodigal follows the tale of a young Eastern Cape farm boy as he decides to leave home and seek out his fortune in the racy and fast-paced city of Johannesburg. Snappy dialogue, split-second character changes, strong physical acting as well as exciting and innovative directing, helps one man bring a multi-faceted cast of characters to life.

From a story-telling Xhosa woman to a morally dubious Middle-Eastern restaurant owner named Joe; an opinionated professor to a Godfather-esque gangster, Redpath’s vocal dexterity takes us on a rollercoaster journey through this timeless drama filled with pride, rejection and sacrifice.

Created by director Dani Marais and playwright Lorraine Knox Cue News calls Prodigal, “Deeply moving. A must see!” and says that Redpath is, “A truly talented actor [who] delivers a gripping performance.” Don’t miss your opportunity to see this innovative piece of theatre.

Cokey Falkow for ONE WEEK ONLY!

cokey.jpg

Cape Town, April 2008: COKEY FALKOW is a very funny man. He’s also deadly serious and it is this dangerous combination that makes him such a compelling presence on the South African comedy scene. Cokey is back in Cape Town for only seven side-splitting shows at the Little Theatre in Gardens. Director Rob van Vuuren has helped Cokey give his well-known show ‘Odd One Out’ a fresh edge and it is not to be missed!

The slightly bizarre looking Falkow brings a physical edge to his routine that criss-crosses the South African experience – from his high school days in white Durban suburbia, to his surreal late night tales of drug paranoia, gun smuggling and anal sex. (And that’s just in the first 15 minutes…). Smart and edgy, Falkow delights in seeing his audience squirm.

Totally off beat but completely in-step, Falkow’s growing reputation has reached international attention, and this local theatre show will be the spring board for upcoming shows in London, Los Angeles, Perth and Melbourne.

Catch him now, because with Falkow it’s now or never. He truly is the Odd One Out.

Let the critics speak…

“Fantastically intelligent!”: TIME OUT
“Absolutely bloody hysterical.”: INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY
“Dangerously funny.”: OBRIGADO
“The ability to have entire audiences rolling in the aisles…” CUE 05
